How to Spot a Genuinely Responsible Breeder in India

Ten green flags (and a few red ones) that separate ethical breeders from puppy mills — so your new companion starts life healthy and happy.

Bringing home a pet is a decade-long commitment. The single biggest factor in how that decade goes? Where your companion came from. Here’s how to tell a caring breeder from a corner-cutting one.

Green flags to look for

  1. They ask you questions. A responsible breeder interviews prospective families as carefully as you interview them.
  2. Health testing is documented. Hip scores, cardiac screening, and DNA panels appropriate to the breed — on paper, not just promised.
  3. You can meet the mother. Seeing the dam (and the environment pups are raised in) tells you almost everything.
  4. Vaccination and deworming records are complete and handed over.
  5. They offer lifetime support and take the animal back if you ever can’t keep it.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Multiple breeds available “always in stock”
  • No willingness to show where animals live
  • Pressure to pay quickly or in full before meeting
  • Prices that seem too good to be true
